During the 2016 Autoimmunity Congress in Leipzig, Prof. Carlo Perricone received a MAI Award and presented his research on The Genetic Interplay of Autoimmunity.
Prof. Perricone main field of interest is systematic lupus erythematosus. During his research his team found several polymorphisms that confer a risk to develop the disease, and specific clinical manifestations such as SLE-related pericarditis and laboratory features such as anti-SSA antibodies.

Going further they confirmed these associations in non-SLE populations, reinforcing the hypothesis that such polymorphisms may be causal in these conditions. Moreover, polymorphisms involved in SLE may be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

More recently, Prof. Perricone has focused his research on the interplay between microbiome and host genetic in psoriatic arthritis. During the 2018 Autoimmunity Congress he will chair the parallel session Smoke, Smoking, Nicotine and Autoimmune Diseases, and present on the subjects Smoke in Autoimmunity: The Smoking Gun and What Is New in Genetic of Arthritis?

Like Rome, Lisbon is built on seven hills and historically even predates the city of Rome. Walking around Lisbon, you can see proof of its significance throughout the ages
Here are 3 examples of what historic Lisbon has to offer:

  • One of the most recognizable landmarks of Lisbon, Belem tower, stands proud on the bank of the river Tejo. The tower was built in the late 15th century and today is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Near the tower you will notice a replica of the small plane that crossed the Atlantic from Portugal to Brazil in 1928.
  • Further east is a striking monument to the Portuguese discoverers, close to which is a pavement map of the world from the glory days of the Portuguese Empire – with Lisbon at the center.
